“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.”Teilhard de Chardin (The Joy of Kindness)
This morning as I sipped my cup of tea, I noticed that it was the perfect temperature-not so hot that it burned my tongue and not so tepid that I lost interest in it. I had the leisure to sit and not have any place to go because ventures outside of the house were limited, for safety sake, due to the coronavirus. Life has changed dramatically. This is going to be the new normal for a while. What are you doing with the extra time?
Here is what I have heard from others… “We are doing so much more cooking.” “The whole family is spending more time together. The dog is loving it!”, “I am reading more.”
Perhaps it’s time to pick up those books that you have not read for months or years. Here is a list that I have compiled from friends.
- All the Light We Cannot See
- Where The Crawdads Sing
- The God of Small Things
- Beneath a Scarlet Sky
- The Other Einstein
- Wolf Hall(Trilogy)
- The Greatest Generation
- Just Mercy
- My Italian Bulldozer
- The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
- The Order of Time
These uncertain times sober us to think about certain realities that we tend to avoid, like our own mortality. Even though a large study in China stated that 80% of those infected will not have serious symptoms, we are still apprehensive. Ebola has a 50% mortality rate while the prediction for the corona virus is about 1%. However, it seems much more frightful when it is closer to home. Doesn’t it? So how are you coping?
I would be remiss if I did not share the stabilizing, comforting, powerful source that has helped me through times of crisis-my relationship with God through Jesus. Knowing that he has created me, has loved my soul before I was born, weeps when I weep, and is always with me, brings me great peace. Of course, I’m apprehensive and concerned but no matter what happens, I know that I will be safe. The smallest advance towards him reciprocates the greatest outpouring of love and concern towards you.
Stay safe, my friend.
